The second trailer for Benny Safdie’s upcoming sports drama, The Smashing Machine, reveals new scenes in which UFC fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne Johnson) and his girlfriend, Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt) both fight and laugh through their addiction struggles. The first trailer, released this April, focused more on Kerr’s individual understanding of himself as a fighter.
The film, which is inspired by the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, is a novelty for both Safdie and Johnson. It is Safdie’s first time directing solo (without his brother Josh) and Johnson’s introduction to roles that deviate from his usual formula of generic invincibility. The brutal nature that Johnson embodies in Kerr is complicated by his mild manners (excepting violent outbursts) and opiate dependency.
The Smashing Machine made its international premiere on September 1, at the Venice Film Festival. It has received mixed reviews.
Graeme Gruttman, writing for Screen Rant, considers Johnson’s performance merely passable and marks the film as generally mediocre. Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman, on the other hand argues that Johnson “gives an extraordinary performance, playing Mark Kerr as a gentle giant with demons that will not speak their name, yet the audience can feel them there.” Brian Tallerico, writing for Robert Ebert, criticizes Safdie’s analysis of the biopic genre, concluding that the film’s ending is underwhelming.
The film will be released in U.S. theaters on October 3. Watch the newest trailer here.
