Lashana Lynch, while on the press tour for Bob Marley: One Love, was asked about her MCU future by ScreenRant. Lynch, who has played multiple versions of Maria Rambeau across the MCU, made a surprise appearance in the post credits scene of 2023’s The Marvels where she became associated with the X-Men and met the main universe version of her daughter Monica, one of the heroes of the film.
When asked about what she knows about her future in the MCU, Lynch explained “I did know [about Maria’s return] going into the movie. I didn’t know what would happen next. I don’t know anything, literally. Every single increment of the character has been play-by-play, so I knew about Captain Marvel, then I knew about Doctor Strange, and then I knew about The Marvels. I didn’t even get the script for that, I just had those moments.”
Lynch’s character, or rather characters, has had a complex history in the MCU. Maria Rambeau debuted in the 1990s set film Captain Marvel where she was portrayed as the titular hero’s closest friend, confidant, and single mother to future hero Monica Rambeau. Later, in the MCU’s first Disney+ series WandaVision, it was revealed that Maria passed away off-screen from cancer. In a more linear franchise, this would mark the end of Lynch’s character, but as Marvel Studios has delved deeper into the Multiverse, Lynch’s character has found ways to live on. First, Lynch reappeared as an alternate universe version of Maria Rambeau where she had become Captain Marvel. She also appeared in a brief but memorable sequence in 2022’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, where she was killed off yet again. More recently, another alternate universe version of Maria appeared in the post-credits sequence of The Marvels.
This new iteration of Maria is expected to have a greater future in the MCU. This version takes on the moniker of Binary, another identity associated with the Captain Marvel mythos in the comics. Carol Danvers took on the identity of Binary after going through a traumatic experience in her life and allied herself with the X-Men. While it is unknown what future Binary will have in the MCU, her appearance with Kelsey Grammar’s Beast in the post-credits scene all but guarantees a return. Could she return in this summer’s Deadpool 3 or the future Avengers: Secret Wars, which are both expected to feature the X-Men and the Multiverse as major plot points? Lynch is not sure. “I know what you know, and that’s it.” Hopefully, it will not be long until Lynch returns as Binary.
