Joker 2 or as Todd Phillips the director has named it Joker: Folie A Deux is gearing up to finish production, including singing practice for Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role. While the musical aspect of the movie has been a major addition with careful consideration by Phillips and the casting choice of Lady Gaga as Harly Quin there was a little problem with Phoenix not being a singer that had to be worked on before he could do a bad romance duet with Gaga.
While there was no ‘Broadway boot camp‘ that Phoenix was subjected to it was decided that since Phillips’s version of Joker did not have him as a performer an armature style of singing with the emphasis on Arthur Fleck’s/Joker’s insanity is the reason for breaking out into song in this gritty noir would assist the narrative. This version of Joker has been stressed as being more human than the pure evil comic counterpart, even sharing a different origin name, so Phillips felt that Joker: Folie a Deux needed to show some of his grappling with holding onto humanity with his desperate attempt at love with this Harley Quin. Thankfully the aspirations for Phillips’s film are coming true with Gaga helping Phoenix with his singing by offering advice and some coaching.
“I do seem to remember (Gaga) spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting and made me feel confident.” When interviewed, Phoenix shared in a joking manner about his journey with learning to sing for the film. On a much more serious note Phoenix shared, “Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine’. For somebody who’s not a performer in that way, it can be… uncomfortable to do that, but also very exciting.” From his interview with Empire Magazine.
