The ‘madness’ continues at Joker 2’s London premiere this Wednesday, as Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, stars of director Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, hit Leicester Square’s red carpet premiere, and were met with an ever-so enchanted audience.
Following the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, Gaga and Phoenix were joined on the London red carpet by Phillips, along with producers Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner.
The sequel to the Warner Bros. DC Comics adaptation calls pop mainstay Lady Gaga to join Phoenix’s Joker as Harley Quinn, the clown’s longtime lover and accomplice in crime. Ahead of the U.K. premiere, Gaga announced her companion album to the film, entitled Harlequin after her role, elevating fans’ excitement on the red carpet.
Joker: Folie à Deux follows Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck awaiting trial at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, where he meets Quinn, spinning their combined madness into a complex love affair. The titular role had previously landed Phoenix the coveted Best Actor recognition at 2020’s Academy Awards.
What can fans expect from Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel? It’s been glamorously teased in press and the film’s trailers that musical elements will be incorporated into the dreary world first cultivated in the 2019 original, presumably putting vocalist Lady Gaga to full use. “What inspired the music is the idea that in the first movie…Arthur, even though he was left-footed with the world, has music in him,” Phillips explained to reporters at the U.K. premiere.
“You saw it in the first movie when he danced down the stairs or danced in the bathroom. So we thought: Well, if he finally finds love in his life, maybe that music that was inside of him comes out of him.”
Joker: Folie à Deux waltzes into theaters October 4th, 2024.
