All eyes are on this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards winner for Best Picture of the year, La La Land.
On top of last night’s victory, the Lionsgate film scored the best per-theater average of the year this weekend. La La Land grossed $855K in five theaters, giving Damien Chazelle’s musical a $171K per theater average.
Previous to La La Land’s impressive numbers, it was A24’s Moonlight which opened in October in four locations grossing just over $402K for a $100,519 PTA. The musical also outscored last year’s top PTA of $130,381 held by Universal’s Steve Jobs.
It appears Chazelle is in for another exciting award season after the success of his previous film Whiplash.
La La Land, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, will make its way into 200 locations and 40 markets December 16.
