Brotherhood, honor, and revenge don’t sound like the ingredients for a comedy, but in Jonathan Sobol’s new film, The Art of the Steal, they blend together for a devious treat.
Jonathan Sobol (A Beginner’s Guide to Endings), wrote the screenplay and directs a cast of mostly comedians in this cross-the-border caper premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Kurt Russell (Stargate, Escape From New York) is Crunch Calhoun, a down on his luck, third-rate motorcycle stunt man who has just gotten out of prison. He’s more famous for his crash landings than his death-defying stunts, but he takes pride in having once been a first class art thief. His scoundrel brother Nicky, played by Matt Dillon (There’s Something About Mary, Crash), convinces him to do one more heist of a historical art book. Things don’t go as planned, and the fact that each brother secretly has his own hidden agenda makes for big laughs.
Two Canadian comedians add to the fun. Jay Baruchel (This Is The End, She’s Out of My League) and Chris Diamantopoulos (3 Stooges). Terence Stamp (Billy Budd, Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert) also stars.
The Art of the Steal is produced by Nicholas Tabarrok and Jeff Sackman is executive producing. Dimension Films, the genre movie division of the Weinstein Company, will distribute the film in the U.S.
