Kung Fu Panda 3 weighed in at #1 in the box office for the second weekend in a row after breaking a record in January for highest grossing animated opening the first month of the year has ever seen.
Kung Fu Panda 3 grossed $41 million in domestic sales on its opening weekend as compared to Kung Fu Panda 2 at $47 million, however both films fell short of the original Kung Fu Panda release in 2008, which grossed a considerable $60 million. Kung Fu Panda 3 reported slightly higher numbers at the box office over this past weekend reaching an estimated $69 million and maintaining the #1 spot over its competition. This amount is still significantly lower than the box office numbers reported in the previous two films. Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2 exceeded $100 million in domestic sales on their second weekend of release.
Kung Fu Panda 3 is sure to be another hit film in an already massively successful franchise, but only time will tell if it has the momentum to surpass its predecessors. The combined profits of all three films puts Kung Fu Panda on track with Toy Story and Shrek to become one of the highest grossing animated franchises of all time. It hasn’t been announced whether DreamWorks plans to make another installment, however based on these numbers it could open the door for another Kung Fu Panda film in the future.
