Actress Kristen Stewart, known for her roles as Bella Swan in the Twilight movie series and Diana, Princess of Wales in 2021’s Spencer, has turned to the director’s chair as her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, has garnered a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Chronology of Water is an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir of the same title. It centers around “a competitive swimmer who must confront her turbulent past and traumatic upbringing by finding solace in literature.” Stewart wrote the adapted screenplay. The feature stars Imogen Poots as Lidia Yuknavitch, Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Kim Gordon, Jim Belushi, Tom Sturridge and Esmé Creed-Miles. Producers include Ridley Scott, Charles Gilibert, Stewart, and her wife, Dylan Meyer.
The Forge acquired the film’s rights at Cannes and set it for a limited theatrical release in North America in December with hopes for a wider release by early January. Mark Mathias Sayre, the CEO of The Forge, spoke about the film and Stewart’s craft, saying,
“She’s carved out a world with unmistakable vision: one that pulses with pain, desire, and defiance…The Chronology of Water is unlike anything we’ve ever released: visceral, expansive, and anchored by a performance from Poots that wrecks and rebuilds you.”
Stewart has directed multiple short features over the years, with her first directorial credit coming from a music video by Sage + the Saints for their song, “Take Me To The South.” Her most recent credit before her feature-length film was the short film and music video by Boygenius titled The Film.
