While expected to be a notable event, it is possible that no one saw the Netflix theatrical release of KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along Event to be as massive as it has been. Even with the largest domestic theater chain, AMC Theatres not partaking in the two-day event due to their terms of not showing streaming releases or dull streaming premieres, every other major chain did. With Regal Cinemas, Cinemark Theatres and Alamo Drafthouse all sporting screenings of KPop Demon Hunters, helping the Netflix original rake in a possible $18 million.
There’s actually no current official total box office for K-Pop Demon Hunters, including for the two-day weekend, due to Netflix, as a streaming service, not reporting an official number. But with the information that is currently available, it’s pretty safe to say $18 million is in the rough ballpark of possible weekend grosses. As a result, Weapons officially comes in first for this weekend with $15.6 million, followed once again by Freakier Friday with $9.2 million.
The rest of the box office followed with much more normal fashion, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps taking third for this week with $5.9 million. The Bad Guys 2 stole fourth with $5.1 million. Nobody 2 dropped to fifth for its sophomore outing this week with $3.7 million.
Kicking off the bottom five is Superman in its seventh week, with $3.4 million landing at sixth. From there, newcomer Honey Don’t, from director Ethan Cohen of the Cohen Brothers, had its second of a reportedly planned connecting trilogy premiere with 3 million, setting it off with a shaky start, along with mixed reviews marking its opening weekend. The Naked Gun took eighth with $2.95 million in its fourth week, having almost kept neck and neck with Honey Don’t. Ninth went to Jurassic World Rebirth after its eighth week, and it has continued to hang on to the top 10, seeing a nice $2.1 million for this outing. In tenth came another newcomer, Relay, which opened to $1.92 million.
Despite not making the top 10, two notable films came in 12th and 13th for this weekend, 12th going to the dubbed version of Ni Zha 2, from A24. The multi-billion-dollar animated Chinese film absolutely dominated foreign markets, but couldn’t reclaim a spot in the top 10 for its second domestic release, with the dubbed version seeing only $1.54 million. Considering it is in its 28th week in theaters, its continued ability to make into the millions should still be noted. From Vertical, the premiere of Eden falls behind expectations with $1 million for its opening, despite some very notable lead actors headlining the film, including Fantastic Four’s Vanessa Kirby, and positive reviews.
