KPop Demon Hunters should not expect a live-action adaptation of the hit Netflix animated movie, as the film’s story creator, co-director, and writer, Maggie Kang, says the feature works best as an animation.

Speaking about the topic of a live-action feature with the BBC, Kang answered,

“There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation. It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So, totally it wouldn’t work for me.”

Chris Appelhans, who co-directed the film with Kang, agreed, stating,

“One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes…The joy of animation is how far you can push and elevate what’s possible.”

Since its June 20th release date, KPop Demon Hunters has been “one of the biggest breakout hits on Netflix.” The lead single, “Golden,” has spent eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and the sing-along version of the feature grossed $18 million at the box office for one weekend. The feature centers around the famous K-pop girl group known as Huntr/x, who “moonlight as demon hunters,” and when the Saja Boys, their rivals, share a “dark secret, the trio must fight to save the world.”

So even though Kang has closed the door for a live-action version, a door for a potential sequel remains open. Kang has made it known that she wants to expand the animated universe,

“We have backstories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movies, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movies for those stories.”

KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.
