A new film is in the works based on basketball legend Kobe Bryant. Dubbed With The 8th Pick, and originally reported by The InSneider, the film currently has no director attached.
Hollywood Reporter notes that the film itself centers around the 1996 NBA draft day and the path Bryant had to stardom. Originally considered by John Nash of the New Jersey Nets, Bryant wound up going to the Los Angeles Lakers after getting picked up by the Charlotte Hornets.
During his career, Bryant would become one of the most popular NBA players in recent years, synonymous with other icons like Shaquille O’Neal and Larry Bird. He spent his entire career with the Lakers, leading them to five championship wins. Bryant even got the gold in basketball at the Olympics several times, first in 2008, then in 2012. He faced an untimely death in 2020, when he and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, as well as several other people, died in a helicopter accident.
Producers on the film include brothers Tim and Trevor White, Ryan Stowell and Gotham Chopra, with a script by Gavin Johannsen.
The Whites have collaborated as producers on several films over the years, such as Ingrid Goes West, No One Will Save You, and even King Richard, another sports biopic. Those titles, as well as With The 8th Pick, were made with production company Star Thrower Entertainment.
