Writer/director/actor Kevin Smith has a lot of dope in his bag, so to speak. Along with his upcoming films Clerks 3 and Tusk, and his hockey/Warren Zevon song-based miniseries Hit Somebody, the indie director/king of dick jokes is also preparing to do a Kaiju-type monster movie (think Pacific Rim and Godzilla) starring the Son of God.Christzilla was first mentioned by Smith on one of his podcasts back in 2008. According to comicbook.com, “In the movie idea, a giant Jesus Christ comes to earth and is throwing the saved up to Heaven. However, the people left on Earth don’t want to die, so they bond with Hell to fight the giant Jesus.”
As far as casting goes, Smith is considering British comedian Russel Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshal, the Arthur remake) for the role of Christ.
If any of this sounds a little strange to you, then you’re probably not familiar with Smith’s filmography outside of his indie comedies like Clerks and Chasing Amy. Consider Dogma which featured stoners helping angels prevent the the end of the universe, or the original ending he wrote for his film Red State – which he spoke about in live Q & A session, Burn in Hell – without giving away too much, it involved a giant sword-wielding Angel and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
In regard to the future of his film career – which he constantly claims to be ending – Smith says, “if I ever make a movie, it’s only ever going to be a movie only I could make.”
