Mallrats 2 is back on track again, as famed comedy director Kevin Smith formally announced on Instagram that a sequel to his classic 1995 film Mallrats would receive a follow-up, according to Movieweb.com. On top of the announcement of Mallrats 2, Smith also confirmed that the project would carry a new title. After a successful 2019 where fans saw Smith return to his roots with Jay & Silent Bob Reboot and a critically-adored international tour that generated over $3 million ,the director felt inspired to revisit his opus with Mallrats 2.
Mallrats 2, now known by its new title Twilight of the Mallrats, will finally be getting off the ground as well as another talked about sequel that never fruition with Clerks 3. Last year Smith reunited with his frequent collaborators Ben Affleck and Jeff Anderson from the Clerks series. Patching things up with Anderson, the two have begun writing the third sequel to what be the Clerks trilogy.
In regards to the final outcome of Mallrats 2, Smith has yet to confirm whether he would be working with an original idea or the very script that was scrapped in 2015. The sequel was supposed to enter production in 2016 but, like Clerks 3, never saw the light of day. Sadly, this also means we won’t get another Stan Lee appearance following his passing in 2018, which remains a highlight of the original film.
