Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is busy fitting the Marvel movies together like billion-dollar game of Tetris. The next piece that’s dropping is Black Panther on February 16th, and the humble head honcho took time to speak with Vulture about Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox during a press junket for the film.
Regarding the studio mega-deal that will bring franchises like X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four under the Disney umbrella, Feige claims that he “read about it in the press like most people did. These are big deals,” Feige said, “and certainly above my pay grade.”
You may expect the man responsible for piecing together seventeen MCU films over the last eleven years to have a plan for integrating characters like Storm and Professor X into Marvel movies that are still in production, but Feige seems intent on focusing on what’s already in place. “It would be years away,” Feige stated, emphasizing the current company priorities with what’s already in motion. “We’ve announced everything through 2019, so none of those would be adjusted. I think about it through 2019, through the movies we’ve already shot or are about to start filming,” said Feige. “I’m hoping to deliver on everything we’ve promised thus far.”
After 2019 and the fourth Avengers movie, your guess is as good as his. For now, he’s keeping his hands on the proverbial controller and doesn’t show any signs of letting someone else take a turn. He has been incredibly successful at keeping the Marvel movies entangled in the same universe and keeping them different enough to avoid the dreaded “superhero movie fatigue” that may or may not be setting in.
“That’s the reason we make the movies we make and the way we make them,” he said. “For years, predating the history of Marvel Studios itself, people asked me about superhero fatigue and if it was a fad or a phase. I say, if they’re all different, if they’re all special, nobody will get tired of these things before we at Marvel Studios will, since we live and breathe these things 24 hours a day. You make films like Thor: Ragnarok, like Homecoming, like Guardians of the Galaxy, certainly like Panther, and the upcoming Infinity War to keep it interesting and change it up. And we will continue to do that.”
