Kevin Feige Opens Up About Marvel Diversity Restrictions

Kevin Feige, Marvel exec who is now Chief Creative Officer for all Marvel content through Disney, has recently opened up in an interview about the restrictions placed on Marvel’s diversity by Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter.

Perlmutter has allegedly made racist and sexist comments and been revealed to be donating large quantities of money to the Trump campaign. After running the company for upwards of 20 years, he lost creative control to Feige in 2015 after a years long struggle between the two.

In regards to the issue of diversity in Marvel films, Feige has confirmed that Perlmutter’s position on the marketing tactic has limited the company’s breadth of representation. With more women and people of color taking on lead roles in recent films like Captain Marvel and Black Panther, and with even more planned for the next phase of the MCU, the change is clear now that Disney CEO Bob Iger has handed over the reigns to Feige.

Another notable change now that power has shifted in the company is profits. Under Perlmutter’s lead, budgets were being kept so low as to limit what could be done and employees were working with minimal resources. Feige protested this and has proven his point that more diversity can be profitable and that better working conditions lead to better results.

Now that Feige and Perlmutter have been separated, Iger has noticed the boosted morale and smoother processes to get women and people of color on the helm of more Marvel films.
