According to Deadline, AFA, the production company owned by Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr, has obtained the rights to remake the cult classic 80s slasher film Sleepaway Camp. Both Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr are said to be serving as producers. Deadline also reports that AFA has hired Robert Hiltzik, the writer and director of the original 1980s film, to write and direct this new remake.
A remake of the film has been a long time coming. Hiltzik and his wife own the rights to the slasher series and have apparently held out for decades on making any deals for a remake until they could find a production company that would allow them to have direct involvement and complete creative control.
The original 1980s film, released in 1983, followed a group of teens hunted down at a summer camp, with the killer being one of the camp members in a whodunnit-style narrative. The film received four sequels: two released in the late 1980s, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989); one sequel released in the late 2000s, Return to Sleepaway Camp, released in 2008, and Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, released in 2012.
Hiltzik, Thompson, and Ryan Jr provided statements to Deadline. Here’s Hiltzik’s statement:
I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.
Thompson said in his statement, “I’m Excited to work with the original genius Robert and bring back to life a camp classic!” And Ryan Jr. said, “This is only the beginning. Kenan and I always say we’re fans first, and this couldn’t be more on brand for us.”
Further details about this new remake are currently unknown.
