Deadline reports that Kelvin Harrison Jr., star of Waves and The Trial Of The Chicago 7, and The Underground Railroad star Aaron Pierre will lead the voice cast of Disney’s upcoming The Lion King prequel.
Production is currently underway for film, with Oscar Best Picture Moonlight director Barry Jenkins looking to explore the mythology of the iconic characters, including Mufasa’s origin story.
Pierre is set to play Mufasa while Harrison Jr. will play Taka. As of right now, additional casting for the film is also under process.
Disney describes the prequel as live-action and is still untitled. It will continue the photorealistic animation technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film of the franchise. Jeff Nathanson is returning to write the script.
According to Deadline, Disney also revealed that music will be coming from Hans Zimmer *who scored the original and 2019 version), Pharrel, and Succession’s Nicholas Britell.
Actor Harrison Jr. is best known for credits including Waves, Luce, It Comes At Night, and Monsters and Men. He will be seen next starring in Joe Wright’s Cyrano and as B.B. King in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biographical film.
Pierre was most recently in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old and as Caesar in all ten episodes of The Underground Railroad. His credits include Syfy’s Krypton and Amazon series Britannia.
In 2019, The Lion King grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide during its theatrical run, surpassing Frozen in becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
