According to a Variety report, Keira Knightley is about to add a new project in the form of the WWII-era biopic of Alan Turing, an English mathematician who helped crack the German Enigma Code, but was criminally prosecuted postwar for homosexuality.
The actress is currenly filming Laggies, which co-stars Sam Rockwell and Chloe Grace Moretz, and has both Jack Ryan and Can A Song Save Your Life in post production, but promotional work for those films is about the only thing that would stand in her way from a scheduling perspective. She is attached to star in Tender is the Night alongside Matt Damon, but the Alan Turing biopic, entitled The Imitation Game, is picking up steam and certainly seems more likely to go into production soon.
Big parts of the reason The Imitation Game is charging ahead are its leading actor and director, Benedict Cumberbatch and Morten Tyldum. Cumberbatch will play Turing in a role Warner Bros. initially envisioned for Leonardo DiCaprio. Independent studio Black Bear Productions (Broken City) eventually took over the project, which is when Cumberbatch and Tyldum were added. Tyldum, a native of Norway, stepped onto the scene in 2003 with Buddy, which drew praise on the European festival circuit. He is best known for 2011’s Headhunters, which counts Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, othewise known as Jaime Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones adaptation, among its key cast. Certainly, it will be a different movie than the one Warner Bros. envisioned, but moviegoers should be excited that what, by all accounts, is an excellent script (it appeared on the Hollywood Blacklist before Warner Bros. took it on) is finally on the road to production.
No news yet on when production will begin or when The Imitation Game might be hitting a theater near you, but don’t be surprised if this project begins shooting by early next year.
