The Goonies premiered in 1985. The teen-adventure movie became a classic and solidified itself in the treasure hunting genre. The movie follows a group of kids called “The Goonies” as they hunt down a pirate’s long lost treasure (IMDb). The film emphasizes friendship and persistence, and now 40 years later the sequel is in the works.
Ke Huy Quan who starred as the creative inventor Data in the original film has spoken about the sequel. According to Screen Rant, Quan said “Well, fingers crossed (for the sequel). We have an incredible writer writing the script. Chris Columbus, Spielberg, obviously, same creative team. Except we’ve been developing for a long time. I want to be optimistic this time around. Hopefully, it will happen soon.” Quan also added that although Columbus stepped down from writing, he is still penning the script and Warner Bros. has brought in Potsy Ponciroli to take on more of the writing.
Pre Production has been a long process and it seemed at many points the film may be dropped. Richard Donner directed the first film and with his passing in 2021 that seemed like a definite halt in the process. However, Quan’s recent words on the film is giving The Goonies fans hope.
