Kate Winslet is set to make her directorial debut for Netflix’s feature film Goodbye June. Along with directing, the Oscar winner will act and produce the self-described “family drama” with Kate Soloman also in a producing role. The cast of the features’ includes Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Helen Mirren, Andra Riseborough, and Timothy Spall. Winslet collaborated with Soloman and Riseborough on the 2023 feature film Lee, where she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of World War II photographer Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller.
Goodbye June’s official synopsis states that the film “is a present-day, fictional drama, set in England. A touching yet humorous story which sees a fractured group of siblings pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.” Alongside that quote, Netflix has confirmed that the feature will go into production “soon”.
When promoting Lee, Winslet interviewed Elizabeth Day on her How To Fail podcast and opened up about her reasoning as to why she hadn’t made her directorial debut yet. Winslet stated due to the commitment the role takes and the fact that she will never “do something unless I really know how to do it properly.” Winslet’s change of heart comes from the fact that she feels that she is “letting down other women by not doing it.” Going further to elaborate, “The more of us [female directors] that are doing it, the more will be inspiring others to do it.
