Kate Winslet is playing the historic WWII photographer Lee Miller in her latest film, Lee. For this film, Winslet prepared extensively. She wanted to do justice to the character. She researched old archives with the help of the real Lee Miller’s son. She also hired a historian to make an exact replica of the photographer’s camera, which she took photos with during the shoot.
Despite all this work, Winslet still has concerns about the role:
When I was doing Lee, I would sit there and I would say, ‘This is ridiculous.… I can truly think of at least five other brilliant actresses who would have played this part much better than me. Like a lot better.’ And often I will turn to another crewmember and I’ll say, ‘They just read the wrong name off the list. I’m telling you, they didn’t mean for me to be here.’
Winslet is very humble about her achievements and believes that they do not qualify her for a specific role. When it was noted that she had won the film industry’s top prize (her Oscar for 2008’s The Reader), her response was, “So what?”
According to Winslet, films about historical women figures don’t typically do well at the box office. Because of this, she is proud to see that the film has already earned $25 million globally.
