Karla Sofía Gascón, an Oscar nominee for best actress in Emilia Pérez, will no longer be making an appearance in LA for press or award ceremonies. This follows a recent controversy regarding old tweets from Gascón’s X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

Recently, Gascón has been accepting interviews and posting on her personal social media accounts. Netflix, the distributor of Emilia Pérez in the United States, Canada, and the UK, has now begun to distance itself from Gascón, leaving her agent, Jeremy Barber, to be the only channel of communication between the two parties. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is not covering transportation or accommodations for Gascón, which is usually a courtesy that studios provide to Oscar nominees.

In addition, others who would have attended certain events have threatened to cancel if Gascón attends, fearing an awkward or uncomfortable situation. Netflix is also doing its best to keep other Emilia Pérez nominees clear of this controversy. Promotional materials for the film have now begun to exclude Gascón.

The voting for the Critic’s Choice Awards closed weeks ago on January 10th. Should Gascón win, it will be interesting to see how her absence is addressed and if it is addressed at all.
