Karen Gillan Joins Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in ‘The Circle’

Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Karen Gillan has signed on for key role in the upcoming adaptation of Dave Eggers’ popular novel The Circle. Gillan joins a star-studded cast including Emma Watson (the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast), Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies) and John Boyega (Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens).

According to Deadline, Gillan will play Annie, a goofy fiercely intelligent member of The Circle, an Internet monopoly that links users’ digital footprints with their universal operating system. She’s joined at the Circle by her best friend Mae (Watson), a newcomer to the tech giant who soon falls under the spell of the reach of the technology available. Boyega’s Ty heads up the megacorporation, with Hanks as a mysterious man whose motivations are unclear.

James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) is adapting Eggers’ novel and will direct. The title was the talk of Cannes earlier this year. Originally, Alicia Vikander (The Man from U.N.C.L.E) was attached for Watson’s role, but when Vikander’s career took off after Ex Machina, it left an opening for Watson to sign on.

Gillan’s upcoming films include The List with Jennifer Morrison and Patrick Fugit, and the western In the Valley of Violence.  She’s also signed on to the Guardians sequel.

Filming on The Circle is expected to begin later this month, and while no release date has been set, the film is expected to open sometime in late 2016 or early 2017.
