Former Dr. Who companion Karen Gillan has confirmed to BBC News that Nebula, her character in Guardians of the Galaxy, will be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, the first of the final two Avengers films. This casting news strikes up speculation into possible comic story-lines that may come to into play.
In the comics, Nebula once claimed to be the granddaughter of the one and only Thanos (which they have changed to father in the films), the same Avengers: Age of Ultron villain who united the infinity stones. The film would have to take its story line from Infinity Gauntlet, which sees Thanos joining the gems and denying Nebula’s claims, only to capture her and turn her into a living corpse. Nebula gets her revenge, though, as she eventually separates Thanos from the Infinity Gauntlet and becomes the miniseries’ final and most powerful villain.
When Guardians returns for Vol.2, Nebula’s sisterly strife with Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will still be a major part of her character arc. From Gillan’s comment, “I’ll be making a little appearance in the next Avengers movies,” it sounds like she’ll be making more of a cameo than driving the plot in any way, although it is likely we will see her in some capacity reuniting with her sister Gamora and her supposed father Thanos.
Gillan will first be returning to Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the meantime, she is currently promoting her directorial debut Tupperware Party and also has a role in the upcoming Jumanji remake.
