Backrooms, the feature debut of director Kane Parsons, was a massive box-office success. The film grossed over $110 million worldwide this past weekend, setting a record for the highest opening for an A24 release. It also made the 20-year-old Kane Parsons, the youngest director to have a film open #1 in multiple box-office markets. With such a high financial success, discussions about a sequel are inevitable.
Well, according to Deadline, Kane Parsons is in very early development of a Backrooms sequel. Sources gathered by Deadline say that Kane Parsons is currently seeking a screenwriting collaborator to help write a Backrooms sequel. Possible collaborators, according to ScreenRant, include Will Sordik, who wrote the first Backrooms, or Roberto Patino, who was originally tapped to write the first Backrooms script before Sordik was hired. Currently, it is unknown if any of these writers have been asked to write the script for a Backrooms sequel.
It must also be stressed that a Backrooms sequel is in such early development that it hasn’t even been greenlit by A24 yet, and no stars are currently slated to star or return from the previous movie. It’s also currently unknown whether the production team of the previous movie, which includes James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins, will be involved in this sequel once greenlit.
For now, fans of the Backrooms can catch the movie in theaters nationwide.
