Joining the illustrious group of live-action remakes of beloved Disney cartoons such as Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp is adapting to the modern age of Disney films, too. Coming 2019, Disney will be launching a yet-to-be-named streaming service that will host all of the classic favorites and the newest choices to the franchise. Much like how Netflix and Hulu create new films and shows to air solely on their site, Disney will also have new additions to be filmed and streamed specifically for the streaming service audiences. Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone will be part of the first fresh films available to stream.
Lady and the Tramp is based on the 1955 animated version of the same name. The narrative follows an uptown Cocker Spaniel named Lady and her exploits with a dog named Tramp from across the tracks. After overcoming some harrowing adventures, the two fall in love. Tramp finally gives up his free lifestyle to be with Lady.
Casting for Lady and the Tramp is already underway. With the picture set to start filming in September, director Charlie Bean (The LEGO Ninjago Movie) is not wasting any time. Screen Rant writes that thus far, Justin Theroux, who voiced Lord Garmadon on Bean’s Ninjago movie, will voice the street-smart Tramp. The actress who voiced Nanette from Gnomeo & Juliet, Ashley Jensen, has been cast to voice the gender-swapped role of Jackie, a female version of the Scottish terrier from the animated film named Jock. The role of Lady as well as her other dog compatriots and human owners have yet to be cast, but Disney is seeking a more diverse troupe to tell their classic stories in a more modern and inclusive manner.
