With the prestigious Cannes Film Festival set to take place in just over two weeks time, the jury for the official selection has been named. Previously announced was filmmaker George Miller, recently Oscar-nominated for Mad Max: Fury Road (a film that premiered out of competition at Cannes last year), would serve as the president the jury.
Assisting with Mr. Miller in selecting which film will take home the august Palme d’Or (Cannes’ highest honor) will be French writer-director Arnaud Desplechin, actress Kirsten Dunst, Italian actress and filmmaker Valeria Golino, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, Hungarian filmmaker László Nemes, French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, Iranian producer Katayoon Shahabi and veteran actor Donald Sutherland. Many members of the official jury already have strong associations with the festival.
Desplechin, whose most recent film is currently in theaters My Golden Years, took his A Christmas Tale (2008) to the festival among others while Dunst and Mikkelsen have previously won acting prizes at the festival (she for Lars von Trier’s Melancholia; he for Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt). Golino’s debut feature film, Miele, played in Cannes sidebar Un Certain Regard two years ago while Nemes premiered his debut film – last year’s Oscar winning Son of Saul – in competition where it won the Grand Prix.
The 2016 Cannes Film Festival runs from May 11th-22nd.
