Spanish director J.A. Bayona, best known for his work Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Rings of Power, has announced work on developing an adaption of author Chaves Nogales’ anthology A Sangre y Fuego. Bayona will be crafting the story with writer-director Agustín Díaz Yanes, best known for their work on Gold, Alatiste, and Nobody Will Speak of Us When We’re Dead.
Based on actual events, the book focuses on nine different stories from multiple perspectives of events surrounding the Spanish Civil War. The war lasted from 1936 to 1936 and was fought between left-leaning Republicans and the conservative Nationalists, who won the battle. The conflict is also known for the atrocities committed by both sides, with the Nationalists killing nearly 130,000 people while Republicans killed around 50,000.
Bayona won best director for The Orphanage, The Impossible, and A Monster Calls at the Goya Awards, Spain’s national film awards showcase.
Bayona is also known for his work directing commercials as well as music videos. Bayona directed the first two episodes of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and is currently completing production on an adaption of Pablo Vierci’s Society of the Snow.
