Isabella Sermon plays Maisie Lockwood in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Her character is responsible for the release of the dinosaurs, which sets up the plot of the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion. Sermon was 12 years old when she played Maisie in 2018. She’s the youngest female leading actress in film, and she provides her excitement for being able to play alongside Laura Dern who returns as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing, and DeWanda Wise as Kayla Watts.
“It’s important to have these female role models. Maisie, as a character has grown up with Claire as a mother who’s really strong and fiery; Ellie who is so intellectual and clever and really powerful; DeWanda’s character Kaylea, who’s a pilot is like super fierce and tough.”
Laura Dern, who returns as Dr. Ellie Sattler, said how Steven Spielberg was interesting in making strong female action character, which was unusual in 1993. Dern expressed what she thought of Dr. Sattler:
“That felt really exciting that that became a takeaway for people who loved the film. She’s badass and physically strong and complicated and funny. I would say that for all the female characters in this franchise.”
Dern’s performance inspired Bryce Dallas Howard to rewatch the original Jurassic Park to provide inspiration for her role as Claire Dearing, sating:
“Dr. Ellie Sattler was such an iconic character in such an important character because she’s a scientist and paleobotanist. It was really important to see an inspiring character like that.”
