Coming fresh from the recently released, critically-acclaimed romantic drama Before Midnight (which she co-wrote with director Richard Linklater and co-star Ethan Hawke), Julie Delpy is now in negotiations to script the adaptation of Marisa Acocella Marchetto’s memoir Cancer Vixen: A True Story.
The film, which is being produced by HBO and Maven Pictures, will be a starring vehicle for Cate Blanchett, who is also acting as executive producer. Aside from Before Midnight, Delpy has also received writing credit for movies such as Before Sunset and 2 Days in Paris.
Cancer Vixen follows the story of a New York cartoonist living a very Manhattan lifestyle. The protagonist draws for big name magazines such as The New Yorker and Glamour, and is about to get married. After she is diagnosed with breast cancer, however, she tries to gain new perspective on her life through her work and her wit. The female-driven film offers a great role for Blanchett, who was last seen starring in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, and it will be exciting to see how Delpy handles the adaptation.
No news yet of a director. Production, obviously, will have to wait until Delpy finishes the script (assuming she does indeed sign on), but it may have to contend for Blanchett’s time with David Mamet’s Blackbird and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, both of which are currently in pre-production and scheduled for a 2015 release.
