Julia Garner, who recently starred in Weapons and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, revealed in an interview with W Magazine that she is set to play Madonna in a feature film biopic, despite rumors that the film was cancelled. The film was originally announced for at Universal in 2020, with Julia Garner being offered the role in 2022. However, the film was reportedly scrapped in 2023.
Oddly enough, a Netflix mini-series centered around Madonna was announced earlier this year, but it seems to be unrelated to the supposedly cancelled Universal feature film. According to Julia Garner, the film is still a “work in progress,” but she did confirm that she is at least playing Madonna in some capacity. Universal has yet to confirm whether the film is back on the table or not. It was originally put on hold when Madonna began her 84-show Celebration Tour since Madonna herself was working on the script. Since the tour ended in 2024, it remains to be seen if she continued work on the script.
Julia Garner does not have much screen credit when it comes to singing, but she did reveal that she had to sing and dance in front of Madonna herself during the audition process. Garner gained notoriety from playing Ruth Langmore on all 4 seasons of Netflix’s crime thriller Ozark. Additionally, she starred in two films directed by Kitty Green, The Assistant and The Royal Hotel. This year, Julia Garner was thrust back into the spotlight with three releases. She played the lead in Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man remake as well as Zach Cregger’s Weapons, and played The Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
There are few details available on the Madonna biopic, but it seems to still be in the works. Stay tuned for more updates on the film.
