After an intense audition process, Julia Garner has been offered the role of Madonna in the upcoming untitled film depicting the life of the pop icon. She’s said to have been up against mega stars like Florence Pugh and Alexa Demie.
Garner, best known for her work as Anna Delvey in Netflix’s Inventing Anna and Ruth Langmore on Ozark, is rumored to be deliberating and leaning towards accepting the role. Though most details are unconfirmed, Julia Fox is also reported to be appearing in the film as Debi Mazar.
Sources have said that the the audition process was extremely rigorous, consisting of 11 hour choreography rehearsals with Madonna’s own choreographer, and then additional sessions with Madonna herself. In addition to dancing, there were singing auditions and callbacks were rumored to have been alongside Madonna.
The Universal Pictures film is said to follow Madonna’s iconic Blonde Ambition Tour, so obviously the actress chosen would need to be a triple threat.
The new picture will be directed by Madonna and just last year when asked about the writing process, the Like a Virgin singer described the writing process as “therapeutic” as she decided what personal stories she wanted to share and dive into on screen.
