For an interview for Entertainment Weekly, and shared by Collider, Julia Garner discussed her role as The Silver Surfer in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. She began by explaining her reaction when she was pursued for the role, saying:
“I knew the basics of certain comic book characters, [and that] there was the Marvel world and the DC world, and they’re very different. I knew about some of the famous comic book characters, some of them I didn’t know. So when I got presented with this opportunity, I was like, ‘Wait, what? Me?’ Yeah, I was in disbelief, almost because it was so cool.”
She also goes on to explain what excited her about the role, and why she viewed it as a bit of a challenge:
“She’s so different than anyone I’ve ever played, and that was also another reason why I wanted to do it. I don’t expect everybody to watch Ozark or [Inventing] Anna or The Assistant. Some people are only going to watch certain things, so that’s why I want to branch out to every genre, and that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to do Marvel – it’s reaching a different kind of audience.”
Garner is the second actor to play the role, after Doug Jones in 2005’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. However, this will be the first time the Silver Surfer has been played and voiced by the same actor in a live-action feature, as while Jones did the physical acting for the Silver Surfer, Lawrence Fishburne dubbed over his voice.
Garner’s new take on the Silver Surfer can be seen when The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases in all standard and large-format theaters on July 25th.
