Captain Marvel is coming together quickly. Jude Law has just been cast to play the male lead opposite Brie Larson in the Marvel film, according to Variety.
Law will also be joining Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the film’s villain, the leader of the Skrulls. Half Nelson‘s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the picture based on a script from Meg LeFauv and Nicole Perlman (Inside Out) with Marvel President Kevin Feige producing.
Captain Marvel will be taking place during the 1990s prior to all the events that have occurred thus far in the MCU. It will follow Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with an alien’s during a freak accident, giving her powers of flight, strength, and energy projection. Law will be playing the role of Mar-Vell, Danvers’ super-powered mentor.
This will be Law’s second recent franchise casting after joining the Fantastic Beasts sequel earlier this year as a young Albus Dumbledore. Previously he co-starred in the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes film series as Dr. Watson. Law turned heads earlier this year in the series The Young Pope, and will next be seen alongside Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section.
