‘Joy Ride’ Cast On Getting ‘WAP’ Rights For The Film

Joy Ride, which was released in theaters on July 7, shocked and delighted users with its raunchy comedy style, and no song fits that image more than “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

In the movie, the four women (played by Ashley Park, Sabrina Wu, Stephany Hsu, and Sherry Cola)  pretend to be a fake K-Pop group called Brownie Tuesday and come up with their own version of “WAP,”, a song with rights that are notoriously hard to get. When asked how they were able to get the rights to use the song, writer Cherry Chevapravatdumrong explained.

“Adele had written a letter to Cardi and Megan Thee Stallion asking for permission on behalf of us, the actors, and what the song meant to the movie, the message of the song, and what the characters were going through. She was explaining it to make sure we had their blessing whether we could use the song. Luckily they read that and said [to] go for it.”

Joy Ride is available to watch in theaters now.
