Josh O’Connor is set to star in director Joel Coen’s new film Jack of Spades. The film will begin shooting this summer on location in Scotland. There are few details about this movie so far, but something we can see is O’Connor is continuing his pattern of working with American directors.
O’Connor has recently been in New York shooting Steven Spielberg’s Untitled Amblin Universal Event Film. He joins Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson in the cast. He also attended the Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of Kelly Reichardt’s art heist movie, The Mastermind. He will also be in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man and Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding. The latter played at Sundance back in January.
Another O’Connor film that premiered at Cannes is The History of Sound, helmed by Oliver Hermanus and based on a novella by Ben Shattuck. He stars alongside Paul Mescal. He was not able to get time away from Spielberg’s set to attend this premiere. In his interview with Deadline, O’Connor noted he filmed all of his scenes for The History of Sound in two weeks, and that the lion’s share of the movie belongs to Mescal, who is also a producer on the film.
In The Mastermind, O’Connor is the leading man who is a bumbling art thief. Also in the interview, he teased that he would take a short break and tend to his garden after completing his work on Spielberg’s film and working on another film this summer. Additionally, he said production would take place “somewhere in Europe” and would be made by “a pretty famous American” director.
Deadline confirmed Coen as the director, and further investigation revealed the location and title of the film. Offer have been made to two British actresses, but their names cannot be confirmed just yet.
Coen’s last directing job was with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand in The Tragedy of Macbeth.
