Director Jon M. Chu has blessed musical theater and Wicked fans by teasing his film adaptation of the iconic musical (Deadline). Despite the film having a long way to go before it is released in theaters November 27, 2024, Chu is making sure that no one forgets this film.
Recently, Chu took to Twitter to reveal two beautiful images of his leading ladies – one of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and one of Ariana Grande as Glinda. This was accompanied with the caption: “You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road?”
You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? Here is your very FIRST LOOK of #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz. ️@WickedMovie @UniversalPics pic.twitter.com/pKdTTmi6kD

The first image of Erivo as Elphaba has her turned away from the camera so that we cannot see her face, which keeps the fans in suspense. Differently from the portrayal of the stage version, she appears to have her hair in a ponytail. There is also the shot of what is presumed to be her broomstick, indicating that the character has decided to become the Wicked Witch of the West.
As for Grande, fans are able to see her face, but because she is so far away, it is difficult to see any details. In the image, she is dressed in a poofy pink dress and has her blonde hair swept back. In the stage version, Glinda only wears pink when preparing to go to a school dance, so the image may be a reference to that scene.
In a follow-up tweet Chu wrote: “I’ve already been changed for good by these two women… #CynthiaErivo & #ArianaGrande as the Witches of Oz. They will lift ur spirits, break ur heart and leave you speechless with their voices. So excited to introduce you into our world… SO much more to come…”
Regardless of what it is, fans cannot wait for that “SO much more to come…”
