This writer’s favorite Disney animated film is getting live action remake. The 2002 flick Lilo & Stitch is reportedly, according to The Hollywood Reporter, getting live action remake and director Jon M. Chu is currently in negotiations. The project is currently looking for a scribe to write the film as well.
The initial concept, entitled Stitch, was originally set to be released on Disney+ feature, but now may get theatrical release if Chu comes aboard. The director has been in the industry for a couple decades, but has recently garnered critical and financial success for Crazy Rich Asians and is awaiting the release of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of In the Heights, directed by Chu.
While this project is still a long way away, the script has not been greenlit just yet, Disney seems to have faith in this project as Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are on board as producers. Those two produced the very financially successful Aladdin remake.
The original film brought a wonderful asian Hawaiian culture to the silver screen. While Stitch is one of the leads and an alien that puts the story into motion, Lilo, her family, and the island around them are the true heart of that movie. It is refreshing to see Jon M. Chu in talks to helm this piece as he is a vital member of the asian community that is growing in the Hollywood industry.
There is not a set production or release date, but this is certainly exciting news out of Disney, even though it is another live action remake.
