Johnny Depp’s newest directorial work has just wrapped production. Following his last director credit from 1997’s The Brave, Modi comes after a prolonged legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
Starring Al Pacino, the film follows Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. An official synopsis states, “On the run from the police, Modi’s desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow Bohemians: French artist Maurice Utrillo, the Belarusian-born Chaim Soutine, and his English muse and lover, Beatrice Hastingjohs. Modi seeks advice from his Polish art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski, but the chaos reaches a crescendo when he’s faced with a collector who could change his life.”
Following the conclusion of production and the release of several on-set photographs posted by The Hollywood Reporter, Depp said it was “an incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience.” Depp, known for such roles as Captain Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands, stressed his gratitude towards the cast and crew. He also gave special recognition to Pacino, saying, “How could I refuse Pacino?”
He wrapped the statement by saying the upcoming film was a “testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking.”
As Hollywood Reporter notes, Depp has stayed away from Hollywood after the fallout of Warner Bros. cutting ties with him for Fantastic Beasts in 2020. WB made the decision when Heard accused Depp of domestic violence, with multiple defamation cases following the allegations.
The film is based directly on Modigliani, helmed by Dennis McIntyre, with a screenplay written by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski.
