Johnny Depp Opens Up About Amber Heard Trial At ‘Modi’ World Premiere In Spain

Johnny Depp arrived in San Sebastian for the premiere of his new directorial feature, Modi — Three Days on the Wing of Madness, at the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival. At a press conference for the film, Depp made a subtle reference to his high-profile legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, which gained widespread media attention.

In addressing the packed room of reporters, Depp drew comparisons between his struggles and those of the film’s subject, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

“Each [character] has their story… I’ve been through several things here and there. Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera. I mean, televised,” Depp said, drawing laughter from the audience.

Modi stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Al Pacino, Stephen Graham, and Antonia Desplat in the titular role. Set against the backdrop of World War II Paris, the film explores a few days in Modigliani’s life as he contends with artistic challenges, pride, and class struggles while seeking recognition for his work.

During the press conference, Depp shared how the project came to life, revealing that Pacino suggested he direct the film.

Depp, imitating Pacino’s gravelly voice, said, “Hey, you remember that Modi thing I was on about a few years ago? I think you should direct it.”

Depp, who first directed The Brave in 1997, has faced controversy in Hollywood following his and Heard’s public defamation trial. However, his cast members praised him for his creativity and kindness on set.

The San Sebastian Film Festival runs from September 20-28, with Cate Blanchett and Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar receiving the prestigious Donostia Award this year. Depp was honored with the award in 2021 for his contributions to the film industry.
