Mortal Kombat will start filming late this year in southern Australia and Director Simon McQuoid has just announced the casting of Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. According to Hollywood Reporter, Taslim is the first actor so far to close a deal on joining the cast for this live-action adaptation of the famed fighting game franchise. The film’s plot is currently unknown but will hopefully feature the original list of character fighters from the games. Greg Russo is currently set to write the film’s screenplay, with James Wan producing.
Mortal Kombat was released in 1992 and it sold 49 million copies, making it the most profitable video game of that time. The franchise has continued to this day, with Mortal Kombat 11 releasing in April and becoming the most successful Mortal Kombat game launch to date.
Sub-Zero is one Mortal Kombat‘s original characters from the 1992 game and remains a fan favorite. He is best known for his attacks involving ice and long-running rivalry with the character Scorpion. In 1995 Mortal Kombat was adapted into a movie directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It grossed impressively with $122 Million at the worldwide box office and was followed up by a 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
Taslim, am alum of the Indonesia’s national Judo team, made his acting debut in 2011’s cult action film The Raid. He’s also worked in the Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond and the recent Netflix feature The Night Comes For Us.
