You Were Never Really Here (or A Beautiful Day overseas) premiered earlier this year at the tale end of the Cannes Film Festival and sent shockwaves through critics and the festival jury. Lead actor Joaquin Phoenix took home the prize for Best Actor and the film also won for Best Screenplay. The visionary behind the project is Lynn Ramsay, who some arthouse fans may remember from 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin. Ramsay has been radio silent for 6 years, but has come back with a film that is sure to not disappoint.
Phoenix plays a law enforcer who is tasked to rescue a young girl from child trafficking. In his mission, the enforcers must face his own personal torments as well as a corrupt force of power and violence existing within the trafficking underground.
Amazon Studios picked up the film and plans to release it internationally in November. There is still no U.S. release date set, however, possibly owing to the fact of the film’s genre-quality violence and a precise plan needed in order to bolster its release and bring in viewers.
