JJ Abrams Confirms ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Is Finished

Star Wars fans, rejoice! Director JJ Abrams has announced the franchise’s newest film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is complete. Considering the film is set for release on Dec. 20, this comes as good news.

Sci-fi veteran Abrams was brought on to direct the film in August 2017 ,following Disney’s firing of original director Colin Trevorrow over creatives differences and pushing production back by seven months. Previously directing 2015’s The Force Awakens, Abrams moved aside for director Rian Johnson to take over for 2017’s The Last Jedi. Johnson, known for 2012’s Looper and the recent mystery film Knives Out, took the franchise in a “new direction,” according to Abrams in an April interview with Fast Company.

The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise’s ninth film, began principal photography in August 2018 and wrapped up in April, giving Abrams’ team just ten months for post-production. As third and final installment in the new trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker will see The Resistance facing the First Order once again and bring the ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith to a close.

Featuring an ensemble cast including the late Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega, the film will take place one year after the events of The Last JediStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on Dec. 20.
