Project X director Nima Nourizadeh is reuniting Adventureland co-stars Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart for his indie action-comedy American Ultra. Written by fellow “found footage” storyteller Max Landis (Chronicle), the story will follow stoner couple Mike (Eisenberg) and Phoebe (Stewart) whose idle existence gets upturned when a government operation aims to take Mike out.
The film also stars Connie Britton (TV’s Nashville), Topher Grace (Take Me Home Tonight), John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge), and Bill Pullman (Nightcrawler).
Lionsgate plans to release the film on August 21st, at the tail end of summer’s blockbuster offerings. That date will also see the release of Focus Features’ Sinister 2 and the Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal) action-drama Criminal, which may present some competition. The spy film The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will also be released the week before, and the video-game adaptation Hitman: Agent 47 the week after. American Ultra will, however, have a good chance at separating itself within the comedy genre.
Another draw for viewers will be the return of both Eisenberg and Stewart to indie comedy (where the two originated as co-stars). Both have recently gone for more dark and dramatic roles – Eisenberg with The Double and Night Moves, and Stewart with Still Alice and Clouds of Sils Maria.
