After the success of the 2016 all-female remake of the 1980’s classic Ghostbusters, and the recent release of the all-female Ocean’s Eight, it does not come as a surprise in the slightest that another star-studded, woman-driven film is on its way to the box offices.
Originally thought of by Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain, 355 is planned to have a plot structure and style reminiscent of The Bourne Identity films. Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, and Penelope Cruz have all joined the cast recently, according to Indiewire.
The script has already been written by Theresa Rebeck (Harriet the Spy), and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) hopes to direct.
The name for the upcoming film was chosen in honor of “Agent 355, an unidentified woman who worked as one of our nation’s secret agents during the American Revolution.”
From what we can glean from the recent announcement at the Cannes film festival, the basis of the film revolves around five women, each representing a different country. The countries include Spain (Penelope Cruz), France (Marion Cotillard), China (Fan Bingbing), and Mexico (Lupita Nyong’o). Chastain will join the cast as well as produce through her company Freckle Films.
