Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Kristen Stewart (Twilight) are an onscreen stoner couple for the second time since 2009’s Adventureland in Nima Nourzadeh’s (Project X) action-comedy American Ultra. The pair play Mike and Phoebe, couple living a quietly baked lifestyle until Mike is activated as a government sleeper agent by a second dynamic duo, played by Connie Britton (This Is Where I Leave You) and Topher Grace (Take Me Home Tonight). Mike must fight (literally and impressively) to save himself and Phoebe from these malicious threats while under the influence of paranoia-inducing and fatiguing drugs. John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge) and Bill Pullman (Nightcrawler) also star.
The trailer makes the movie out to be like a Pineapple Express for the indie crowd, with the stunts and action turned up a notch. With the director of Project X at the helm and the writer of Chronicle (Max Landis)—two found-footage films—audiences can likely expect a lot of production value put into the look and feel of American Ultra.
American Ultra hits theaters on August 21st. Check out the red band trailer below, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, in which Eisenberg makes his official debut as a “stoned cold killer.”
