Pop star and actress Jennifer Lopez battles artificial intelligence in a science fiction future in Atlas, her new film releasing on Netflix this May. The trailer for the film shows off more of Lopez’s character Atlas Shepherd and her distrust of AI.
Atlas volunteers to fight Harlan, a villainous artificial intelligence played by Shang-Chi and Barbie star Simu Liu implied to have a history with Atlas. Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong round out the cast as members of Atlas Sheppard’s military organization.
To defeat an AI, Atlas must learn to put her trust in an AI. Atlas begrudgingly teams up with a buddy AI named Smith who warns her about the gravity of her mission: “Atlas, this won’t work if you don’t trust me”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Atlas is directed by Brad Peyton from a script by Leo Sardaria and Aron Eli Coleite. The official synopsis for Atlas reads: “Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. Atlas is only on Netflix, May 24.”
