O Jennifer Grey, where art thou? Or rather, where hast thou been? Despite featuring in several successful movies in the 1980s – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Red Dawn, and of course, Dirty Dancing – Grey hasn’t made much of a splash in recent years (except for maybe when she won Season 11 of Dancing With The Stars). But there has been news that Grey is supposedly attached to a new project on the horizon.
Most of the details are a mystery, but here’s what the press knows so far. It’s a musical set in the 1990s, the film is being backed by Lionsgate, and the scriptwriters for the project are Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, the writing team behind Five Feet Apart.
There has been a notable trend of teen stars from the ’80s and ’90s making appearances in current films and TV series: the late Luke Perry on Riverdale, Molly Ringwald in SPF-18 and The Kissing Booth, Alicia Silverstone in Netflix’s new series, The Baby-Sitters’ Club, an adaptation of the popular book series from the ’80s. Jennifer Grey may be the next in a line of actors brought back to the screen by the 30-year cycle of nostalgia.
It’s worth noting that Lionsgate owns the rights to Dirty Dancing and its sequel, Havana Nights. Whether or not this new film could be a reboot of Dirty Dancing is unknown, but whatever the case may be, hopefully the movie will prove that nobody puts Jennifer Grey in a corner.
