Jennifer Garner may be returning to her action star roots for the upcoming STX release Peppermint. According to Deadline, the former Alias actress is in negotiations to star in the film, which follows a woman taking revenge on the people who killed and helped cause the death of her family.
Taken helmer Pierre Morel is directing the film, which is being billed as the female John Wick, although the premise is reminiscent of several revenge thrillers of which there are too many to count. Peppermint, written by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen), will tell the story of a woman left without a family when they are gunned down in a seemingly random drive-by. She wakes up from a coma and trains for several years later to become a lethal killer. Once the time is right, she sets out to take revenge against everyone involved in the terrible crime — those that shot her family, the lawyers that freed them from incarceration, and the corrupt police force that allowed for this type of violence.
This will be Garner’s first major action role after starring for many years as the ass-kicking special agent Sydney Bristow in Alias. During the duration of the show, she also starred as Elektra in Daredevil, as well as a stand alone film for her super-antihero. Recently, she has forgone action films and her previously common romantic comedies for either children’s programming or indie drama, starring in such films as Dallas Buyers Club, Miracles From Heaven, and Wakefield. Later this year, she will be starring in an adaptation of The Tribes of Palos Verdes alongside rising actress Maika Monroe.
