When Cameron Crowe first announced Deep Tiki, well, for one, it was still called Deep Tiki, but more importantly, it was due for a January 2009 release with Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon to star. Five years (and one We Bought a Zoo) later, Crowe finally gets to make his still untitled romantic-comedy-adventure with the next generation of comedy favorites.
It has already been announced that blockbuster comedy regulars Bradley Cooper (The Hangover Trilogy) and Emma Stone (Easy A and Crazy, Stupid, Love) would be getting a hilarious supporting cast in Rachel McAdams (Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers), Alec Baldwin (NBC’s 30 Rock, Blue Jasmine), and Danny McBride (Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder). Now we can add one more funny man to the list, Danny McBride’s This Is The End co-star, and Crowe alum (Almost Famous) Jay Baruchel.
Crowe’s tale is about a Hawaiian-based defense contractor (Cooper) that teams up with an Air Force Pilot (Stone) in supervise – and eventually prevent – the launch of a spy satellite. With a plot-twist that sounds like a missing episode of Lost, the two end up falling in love when they have to contend with mystical island forces and a talking computer. Jay Baruchel has been cast to play Bradley Cooper’s step-brother. While this type of adventure story isn’t usually Cameron Crowe’s cup of tea, he has a pretty good track record with heartfelt comedies. We’ll have to see what type of film the movie-formerly-known-as Deep Tiki turns out to be.
Jay Baruchel just appeared in the 2013 summer blockbuster This Is The End, and is set to appear in the upcoming Robocop remake as well as returning as a voice actor to How To Train Your Dragon 2.
Producing the film for Crowe is Scott Rudin.
